The Rise of the Unplugged Wedding Ceremony: Why It Matters

If you are considering asking guests to put away their cell phones and cameras during your wedding ceremony, you are not alone. Unplugged weddings are becoming increasingly popular, and as a wedding videographer, I couldn't be happier with this trend. I've witnessed countless professional photos ruined by guests who become obtrusive with their own cameras and cell phones.

unplugged wedding ceremony

I’m not referring to the average guest who snaps a quick photo, but rather the one guest in a hundred who pushes the boundaries of appropriateness. We’ve all seen them—the guest with a vertical iPad who chooses to stand behind the bride as she walks down the aisle. Or the uncle with an iPhone and an outstretched arm, blocking an incredible shot of the mother of the bride. It may seem unimportant to some, but it can definitely be frustrating for the bride and groom. While most guests are respectful and discreet with their devices, it only takes one to create a “missed moment.” To ensure I get the shot I need, I often have to pivot to work around these obtrusive guests.

I've captured countless screenshots of these obtrusive guest photographers in action, but I've opted not to include them here—except for the photo above, which finally prompted me to write this post. Just know that if you’ve ever been this guest at a wedding, you may have been captured on film. Yes, we know who you are!

The Vision Behind My Filmmaking

My goal as a San Diego wedding videographer is to immerse the viewer in the wedding day experience through a film that captures the events as they naturally unfold. I want the viewer to hit “play” and feel the emotions, the atmosphere, and all that the day encompasses. To achieve this, I employ a “behind-the-scenes” approach to filmmaking, looking for those naturally occurring moments that are unique to each wedding. For example, that moment when a bride laughs at her sister’s joke or when she playfully grabs the groom’s rear when she thinks no one is looking.....often it’s the best man doing the grabbing ;)

Capturing these unique moments is essential in making your wedding day film one-of-a-kind, which aligns with my filmmaking style. Considering the extensive preparation, planning, and anticipation that goes into making a wedding special, wedding films are highly treasured by couples. For this reason, it is crucial for guests to be considerate and aware of photography etiquette.

Embracing the Unplugged Wedding Ceremony

With all that said, I wholeheartedly support the concept of the unplugged wedding ceremony for the sake of the bride and groom's special day. By asking guests to refrain from using their devices, you can ensure that the focus remains on the ceremony and that the professional photographer and videographer can capture your day without interruptions.
